В статье рассматривается история развития книгопечатания в Японии с периода Нара (710 - 794 гг.) до наших дней. Уделяется внимание тому, как выглядела книга, приводятся основные виды переплетов. История развития отрасли в XX веке прослеживается на примере крупнейшей компании Японии - «Коданся». Подчеркивается связь с влиянием извне (Китай и Запад) и литературным процессом в самой Японии.
